Treatment
Osteomyelitis
- It is an infection of bone or bone marrow space usually caused by bacteria, or fungi
- It commonly develops in long bones
- Generally, bacteria are transported to bone by cause of bloodborne infection (hematogenous spread) or an open wound
- The risk is increased by peripheral vascular disease, urinary tract infections and indwelling bladder or vascular catheters, prosthetic joints, injection drug use, diabetes mellitus, aging, animal bites and soft tissue infections.
- HIV+ patients may be infected by uncommon organisms
- Biopsies and bone cultures are fundamental. There would be weeks of antibiotics and possibly surgery to heal specially if you are diabetic or use prosthetic device.
